Versailles Municipal Utilities is working to identify the material of all the service lines serving customers in our system.
To help us determine the material of the service line connected to your home or business, please contact us at 859-873-5436, Ext. 128 for assistance or go to https://us8.list-manage.com/survey?u=b7feaef92684d9605b8b3ae3d&id=810c8cd7ac&attribution=false to complete an online survey. Paper copies of the survey are available at our office at 196 South Main Street, Versailles, Kentucky. For more information about why we are doing this and how to identify the material on your own, check out bit.ly/checkyourpipesky or epa.gov/lead.

How to Self-Identify Service Line Materials:
• Step 1: Find your Point of Entry (POE). Find the water service line entering your house as close as possible to the POE (close to where it comes through the foundation wall or slab). The incoming water service may come up from the basement floor or out of a basement wall. The line will come out of the floor in a crawlspace. . If the house is on a slab, the service line will come up through the main floor, typically in a utility closet.
• Step 2: Scratch test
• Use a key or coin to scratch the pipe close to where it enters the house through the wall or floor.
• If the pipe is shiny and orange like a penny, it is not a lead service line.
• If the pipe is grey, it may be a lead service line.
• Step 3: Magnet test
• Hold a magnet to your service line.
• If the magnet sticks, the service line is steel.
• If the magnet does not stick, the service line may be made of copper or plastic; plastic pipe may be red, blue, black, or white.
• However, if a magnet does not stick and the pipe is not obviously plastic, it may be made of lead.
